NEW YORK — Last October, Rick Knapp drove to Lakeland, Fla., to have dinner with Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Leyland had interviewed the former Virginia Tech standout a few days earlier for his pitching-coach vacancy. “How you feeling?” Leyland asked Knapp when they met up again in a parking lot outside the Tigers’ instructional-league complex. “I’m nervous,” replied Knapp, then the minor-league pitching coordinator for the Minnesota Twins. Leyland asked him why. “I’ve been in the minor leagues for 26 years,” Knapp told him. “I didn’t think you’d make me drive 212 hours up here to tell me I didn’t get the job.
