Serbian intent on regaining top spot

Former world number one Jelena Jankovic has blamed her recent slump on an ill-conceived fitness regime.

The Serbian is currently ranked fourth in the world but after early exits in Indian Wells and Miami, claimed her first victory of the season in Andalucia earlier this month.

And having shelved the fitness plan that was introduced by her team, the 24-year-old is concentrating on getting her game in shape for the remaining three grand slam events of the year.

“I feel I am coming back into form,” said Jankovic, who defends her Porsche Grand Prix title in Stuttgart this week.

“For a while I could not find myself on the court. I did a lot of fitness work in the off-season and that was the problem.

“I was one of the fastest players on the tour but I started feeling very heavy. I felt so slow, my whole game broke down. Then the confidence falls.

“You listen to your team and you think it will bring results. But my body just did not accept it.

“I am not doing any more experiments. My goal now is finding my game again and winning grand slams. This is what I said to myself.”

Jankovic begins her defence in the first round against Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova.
