Twenty20 Match
Lord’s
West Indies 144-6 Innings Complete v England 145-1 Innings Complete (L J Wright 75 no, R S Bopara 60)
England beat West Indies by 9 wkts
England continued their preparations for the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20 with a comprehensive nine-wicket success over West Indies at Lord’s.
Having restricted their opponents to 144-6 off 20 overs, England raced to their victory target with more than five overs to spare as Ravi Bopara blasted 60 and Luke Wright 75 not out.
Bopara eventually fell to Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s very occasional spin, holing out to Xavier Marshall on the boundary rope, but Kevin Pietersen (four not out) and Wright saw England home with ease.
Earlier opener Marshall had made 36 for the West Indies, one of only two genuinely meaningful contributions for the tourists with Ramnaresh Sarwan top-scoring with 46 not out.
Marshall had put on 30 with opening partner Andre Fletcher before a misunderstanding led to the latter being run out.
Chanderpaul departed first ball after top-edging James Anderson down to fine-leg, Ryan Sidebottom taking a quite superb running catch over his shoulder.
Kieron Pollard managed only two before becoming his side’s second run out victim, while Wright picked up the wicket of Marshall who edged behind to James Foster.
Adil Rashid removed Dwayne Bravo for 13 with Ravi Bopara holding on to the catch and when Graeme Swann chipped in to dismiss Lendl Simmons, the West Indies were 113-6.
Sarwan and Ramdin added another 31 to add some respectability to the total, but it still proved wholly inadequate as England coasted to victory.
Bopara’s 35-ball innings contained some superb shots with the in-form Essex star blasting four boundaries.
Wright was travelling at a slightly more sedate rate, but the Sussex all-rounder blazed three sixes in one over as he raised the pace and eventually ended with eight fours and five sixes.
