The Czech Open reached its halfway stage on Friday with no fewer than 13 players separated by just two shots at the end of the second round in Celadna.

Two of them, Peter Hanson and Simon Dyson, are chasing a Ryder Cup place with the former, 15th on the points table, sharing the lead on seven under par with fellow Swede Fredrik Widmark.

United States Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin insists Tiger Woods is not playing as badly as most people think.

The world number one has looked a shadow of his former self in 2010 with the ghost of November’s sex scandal still following him.

He returned to finish fourth in both the Masters and the US Open but continues to struggle on the putting green and with his swing.

Anthony Kim continues his return from thumb surgery at this week’s Wyndham Championship hoping to confirm his Ryder Cup wildcard credentials.

The tournament at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina is Kim’s third event back. He finished 76th out of 80 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and missed the cut in the USPGA Championship.

World number 450 Arjun Atwal surged into the lead after carding an opening round 61 at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

The 37-year-old Indian equalled the course record at the Sedgefield Country Club with a flawless round which included nine birdies.

Atwal, who only qualified for the tournament on Monday, holds a two-shot lead over former champion Brandt Snedeker with a group of six players a shot further back.
