Formula One set for expansion with 26 cars to race next year

Formula One is poised to become a 26-car championship next season for which a £40million budget cap has been imposed.

Following Wednesday’s meeting of the World Motor Sports Council in Paris, it was agreed the maximum number of cars permitted to enter would be increased to 26, two for each team.

After announcing a £30million cap in mid-March, the WMSC has now increased that figure by a further £10million, with the formation of a new costs commission to police the regulation.

AC Milan will not stand in the way if Kaka wants to join Manchester United in the summer.

Club owner Silvio Berlusconi hopes to persuade the brilliant Brazilian to stay at the San Siro, but insisted it was not the club’s style to hold on to players against their will.

Sportsmail understands that United see Kaka as the ideal signing should Cristiano Ronaldo leave for Real Madrid in the summer and they are preparing to open the bidding at about the £50million mark.
